We have watched
with great interest the advent of the proposed,
and now passed, 10% Allegheny County Liquor Tax.
Although we are located very close to the
Allegheny county line in Beaver County -- and
theoretically stand to benefit from the
imposition of this tax -- we are shocked at its
passing, and believe it to be wholly
inappropriate and unfair.
This sort of
regressive tax does nothing to encourage growth,
nor the creation of an atmosphere for
individuals or businesses to invest in our area.
Not only are
Allegheny County patrons being unfairly and
unduly forced to carry an additional and
unwarranted financial load, but the restaurant
and banquet industry in Allegheny County is
being asked to bear the burden of assisting an
entity whose waste has been well documented.
Obviously -- as a
food service business outside of Allegheny
County -- we, and others like us, will have a
distinct competitive advantage. And, as such,
I’m sure we will benefit from the imposition of
this 10% Poured Drink Tax. Many Allegheny
County Brides-To-Be, and those looking for
Corporate Banquets, will have no hesitation in
driving the extra 5 miles to save $500.00,
$600.00, or more, to avoid paying this
additional tax. Although we stand to benefit
from this tax, we believe that our industry as a
whole will suffer.
We have been
against the levying of this tax, and are
strongly opposed to any expansion of this
outrageous and excessive taxation. Allegheny
County and Pennsylvania as a whole must face
reality, and adapt our over bloated governments
to the 21rst century. Our “Commonwealth”, as
well as our county, and local governments, are in
dire need of radical cost cutting reform in
order to compete in today’s global marketplace.
The successful
governments of tomorrow must find the means to
lower the financial burden on individuals and
businesses if we ever hope to encourage growth
and secure our future.
